The first FIA Esports Global Rally Tour will conclude in Shanghai this December, bringing 16 virtual rally drivers together for a live world final. Competitors began in an open online qualifier before progressing through regional shootouts held across six international regions.
The tournament is played on Assetto Corsa Rally and follows a format built around stage times rather than wheel-to-wheel racing. Drivers compete against the clock, so there is no rival car to overtake and no slipstream to use. Every braking error appears directly in the final time.
The competition belongs to the same broad digital entertainment market as livestreaming, racing games and an online casino, but rally esports demands sustained accuracy rather than a quick result. A driver can lead several sectors and still lose the stage after clipping a bank near the finish.
The route to Shanghai began online
Registration for the 2026 competition opened in May. Drivers then had two weeks to record their best times on the official Assetto Corsa Rally server.
The online phase was open to eligible players without an esports licence. Times were registered automatically and displayed on a public leaderboard, allowing competitors to see the exact margin separating them from a regional shootout place.
That visibility changes how drivers approach an attempt. A competitor who is half a second outside qualification knows that a small improvement could be enough. Someone several seconds behind may need to reconsider the entire setup or driving line.
Repeated attempts help drivers learn the stage, but they can also encourage unnecessary risks. Braking slightly later may save time at one corner, though it increases the chance of missing the next apex or leaving the road.
The fastest online competitors earned invitations to regional events. Eight drivers qualify for most regional shootouts, while Europe receives 16 places because of the size of its entry pool.
Six regions produce the final 16 drivers
The FIA divided the competition into Europe, North America, South America, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and North Africa, and Africa.
Macau hosted the Asia-Pacific shootout during the FIA Conference in June. The European stage will take place at the 2026 SimRacing Expo in Frankfurt between 16 and 18 October. Other regional details are confirmed separately as the tour progresses.
The regional format prevents one area with a particularly large sim-racing community from taking every position in the final. It also gives drivers outside Europe a clearer route into an international FIA esports competition.
Only 16 competitors will reach Shanghai. The final is scheduled between 7 and 12 December as part of the week containing the FIA General Assemblies and FIA Awards.
Placing the esports final alongside those events gives the winner a connection to the FIA’s established motorsport structure. The virtual champion will compete during the same week that leading figures from physical racing gather in the city.
Rally esports is decided without direct contact
Circuit racing games place several cars on the track together. That introduces overtaking, defensive positioning and the possibility of losing time because another driver caused an incident.
Rally removes most of those variables. Each competitor attacks the same road separately and tries to set the lowest total time.
The absence of direct contact does not make the competition simple. Rally stages contain blind corners, changing surfaces and narrow sections where a minor steering correction can send the car into a barrier.
Drivers depend on pace notes to understand what lies beyond their immediate view. Those instructions describe the direction and severity of the next corner, along with hazards such as crests, junctions or tightening bends.
Listening becomes part of the driving technique. Turning before the instruction has been processed can place the car on the wrong line. Waiting until the corner is visible may already be too late.
A strong rally esports competitor therefore needs to combine memory with trust in the pace notes. After enough practice, the driver knows where the largest risks sit but must still respond to the information arriving through the headset.
Recovering a slide can be faster than avoiding one
The quickest line on a rally stage does not always keep the car perfectly straight. Drivers may rotate the rear of the vehicle before a tight corner so the front is already pointing towards the exit.
Too little rotation forces the car wide. Too much creates a spin or leaves the driver fighting the steering while trying to accelerate.
Throttle control is particularly important on loose surfaces. Applying full power too early can make the wheels spin without producing useful forward movement.
A driver using a steering wheel and pedals can make very small changes to acceleration. Gamepad and keyboard competitors must achieve the same effect with different inputs.
The FIA allows any hardware setup, including a keyboard, gamepad, wheel or pedal system. There is no compulsory simulator rig beyond the requirements needed to run the game.
That rule keeps the initial competition accessible, but equal software does not make every setup identical. A high-quality wheel can communicate more detail about grip, while a stable seating position helps a driver repeat the same movements.
Expensive hardware still cannot select the correct braking point. A competitor who misreads a corner will lose time regardless of the equipment being used.
Consistency matters more at a live shootout
Online qualifying allows drivers to practise in a familiar room and choose when to attempt their fastest run. A live regional event removes much of that control.
The equipment may feel different. Pedal resistance, wheel force and seating position can all affect muscle memory, even when the game settings are similar.
There is also less freedom to abandon a poor attempt. Online, a driver can restart after making an early mistake if the server rules permit it. During a live competition, that error may need to be carried through the rest of the stage.
Pressure affects pace-note processing as well. A nervous driver may focus too heavily on the visible road and stop listening properly, leaving them unprepared for a hidden corner.
The best response is rarely to drive conservatively everywhere. Excessive caution can lose several seconds across a long stage. Drivers must identify where risk can produce a meaningful gain and where finishing cleanly is more valuable.
A small slide on a wide corner may cost only a fraction of a second. Touching a wall or rolling the car can end the entire run.
An international esports licence becomes necessary
No licence was required for the open online qualifier. Drivers reaching the regional shootouts must hold at least an FIA International Esports Licence issued through their national sporting authority.
Competitors must also be at least 14 on the day before their regional event. Younger qualifiers may require additional permission and travel support depending on the rules in their country.
The licensing requirement separates casual leaderboard participation from the later stages of an official international competition. It allows the FIA and national authorities to confirm identities, eligibility and the region each driver represents.
It also gives the tournament a structure similar to other recognised motorsport disciplines. A fast online time opens the door, but participation at the live stages involves formal sporting rules.
Drivers must understand conduct requirements and event procedures as well as the game itself. Ignoring an instruction or breaching competition rules can undo the performance that earned qualification.
Shanghai will test more than outright pace
The 16 finalists will have already survived an online leaderboard and a live regional shootout. Every driver arriving in Shanghai should therefore be capable of setting a competitive stage time.
The difference may appear after a mistake. A competitor who loses half a second early must decide whether to increase the risk or accept the deficit and protect the remainder of the run.
Chasing the lost time immediately can turn a small error into a retirement. Remaining too cautious may allow another driver to extend the advantage.
Car setup choices add another layer. A responsive vehicle can change direction quickly but may become difficult to control over uneven sections. A stable setup is easier to manage, although it can lose time through tighter corners.
The winner will need to understand which compromise suits each stage rather than searching for one setup that works everywhere.
That is why the first FIA Esports Global Rally Tour cannot be reduced to one impressive lap. Rally stages punish impatience, and the route to Shanghai already requires drivers to perform in two different environments. The champion will be the competitor who can carry online speed onto a live stage without allowing one ambitious corner to erase the entire run.
