Kacey Montoya rarely keeps things to herself online. She can name the exact shelter where she found her rescue dog, and she posted a tribute to her father on Father’s Day this year. When her thirteen-year run at KTLA came to an end this spring, she wrote about that too, in her own words, on her own page. One part of her life has never gotten the same treatment. She still isn’t married, and despite a decade of blogs insisting otherwise, she never has been.

How the Kacey Montoya husband rumour began
The one time she came close to the subject at all was in a joke. On 28 August 2014, her then KTLA colleague Mark Mester posted a photo tagging her next to a man neither of them named. Montoya replied that he was her husband, adding that she wasn’t worried because he preferred blondes. It was a throwaway line between coworkers, not a real disclosure, and she never returned to it. Nobody at the time thought it needed correcting, because there was nothing to correct. Over the following decade, sites built for search traffic rather than accuracy picked up the joke and began repeating it as settled fact. Montoya has never had a Wikipedia page, so there was no neutral record for anyone to check instead, and the joke often became the only thing a search turned up.
Why the Matt Brode story specifically stuck
Matt Brode is a real meteorologist, now chief meteorologist at KVOA in Tucson, Arizona, and the name most of the fabricated stories settle on for her supposed husband. That part isn’t random. Brode had spent years forecasting for KVOA before he moved to Portland, Oregon, in 2010 to join KOIN-TV, the same station where Montoya was already working as a reporter and anchor. She had been there since late 2007. For about three years they worked at the same station, before Brode left Portland and returned to Tucson, where he eventually became chief meteorologist. That real overlap is almost certainly why a joke about an unnamed man in a photo got attached to a specific, plausible name instead of fading out the way most inside jokes do.
It’s also false. Brode’s own social media describes him as a husband and father, married since 2017 to a woman named Ana Maria, with two children. He and Montoya haven’t worked at the same station in well over a decade. Search her name today and the confusion only multiplies. Old photos of her at other people’s weddings, standing next to a bride rather than being one, get picked up by copycat bio sites as evidence of a wedding of her own.

The bigger change in her life this year had nothing to do with any of that. KTLA let her go this February, along with four other longtime staff, Mark Kriski, Lu Parker, Glen Walker and Ellina Abovian, as its parent company, Nexstar Media Group, cut costs across the station. Rather than clear out straight away, Montoya worked her full 60-day notice and kept doing the weekend forecasts. She called it “13 wonderful years” on her own Instagram before finally signing off in April. The New York Post and the Los Angeles Daily News both covered her departure at the time.

Since leaving KTLA, most of her public attention has gone into Fix’n Fidos, the nonprofit she has run since 2017 to help low-income pet owners across Southern California cover spay and neuter costs and emergency vet bills. She’s said publicly that being unable to afford it shouldn’t mean someone has to give up a pet. The fundraising behind that keeps growing: its most recent golf tournament brought in more than $120,000, over double the year before, and she has kept making media appearances for it, including a spot on Fox 11’s Good Day LA.
Her love life hasn’t gotten the same treatment. Since late 2025, Matt Spence has turned up again and again in her posts: at that golf tournament, over Christmas, on a trip through Milan and Florence in February, at a Dodger game as recently as last month.
