Pietra Dawn Cherniak: The Divorce, the Truth, and Life Today

On March 24, 1997, Pietra Dawn Cherniak was at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles when Billy Bob Thornton accepted the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Sling Blade. She was by his side. Eighteen days later, she filed for divorce and went public with abuse allegations that became national news.

That gap, 18 days between Hollywood’s biggest night and one of its messiest public splits, is where the real story starts.

Before She Was Known as Thornton’s Wife

Born on February 9, 1970, in Santa Monica, California, Pietra Cherniak grew up along the Southern California coast. She attended Palisades Charter High School in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles. She is of Russian-Ukrainian heritage, something she has spoken about through her own social media.

By her early twenties, she was working as a model in Los Angeles, taking on agency work, print campaigns, and fashion shoots. She was building something for herself in a competitive industry, in a city where that is rarely straightforward, before anyone outside the LA modeling scene had heard her name.

How She Met Billy Bob Thornton

The two met in the early 1990s outside an Italian restaurant in Los Angeles. Thornton had recently ended his marriage to actress Cynda Williams and was, at that point, a working actor still years away from the film that would define his career.

They married on February 18, 1993. Cherniak was 23. Thornton was 37. It was his fourth marriage.

Two sons arrived within the first 14 months:

  • William Langston Thornton โ€” born June 27, 1993
  • Harry James Thornton โ€” born June 19, 1994

The family settled in Pacific Palisades. As Thornton’s profile rose through the mid-1990s, Pietra became a regular at industry events. She attended the Sling Blade premiere in November 1996, the AFI Gala honoring Martin Scorsese in February 1997, the SAG Awards on February 23, 1997, and the Directors Guild of America Awards on March 16, 1997.

She also received a special thanks credit in Sling Blade itself.

In February 1996, she told People magazine that Thornton would never do anything “to make me question the integrity of our marriage.”

She was at the Oscars with him on March 24, 1997.

Eighteen days later, she filed for divorce.

The Divorce: What the Court Records Show

Pietra filed on April 11, 1997, citing irreconcilable differences. She simultaneously sought a restraining order, alleging repeated physical abuse throughout the marriage.

Her words from the court documents, as reported by People magazine:

“Over the past year, at least once or twice per month, [Thornton] has hit me, pushed me, punched me, bit me or otherwise physically attacked me, sometimes in front of the children.”

She further alleged that Thornton had grabbed her by the neck, lifted her off the ground, and threatened to kill her in front of their two young boys.

Her older sister, Elysabeth Cherniak, separately accused Thornton of online stalking and of interfering in the marriage. He denied that as well.

Thornton’s public response: “Our marriage was not perfect, but I never exhibited the behavior she’s accusing me of. Our concerns right now should be about our sons, who will suffer the most as a result of her advisers’ conduct.”

A temporary restraining order was granted by the court. No criminal charges followed. The matter stayed within civil proceedings, and the divorce was finalized in 1997.

Worth noting for context: Thornton had been rumored in early 1997 to be involved with actress Laura Dern, whom he met when both appeared as guest stars on the ABC sitcom Ellen. He denied it during the marriage. After the divorce, he got engaged to Dern, though he ultimately married Angelina Jolie in 2000.

Her Response: The 1998 Playboy Appearance

In January 1998, Pietra appeared in Playboy. She was clear about the reasoning behind it.

She called it her “declaration of independence” and used the platform to speak directly about domestic violence, telling the magazine: “I want people to notice me and hear my message: Women must escape bad relationships.”

For a woman whose public identity had been tied almost entirely to her marriage, it was a pointed and intentional move. After that, she largely stepped back from media attention. In 2005, she appeared in an episode of E! True Hollywood Story, which revisited her relationship with Thornton and the events of 1997. Beyond that, she gave no further interviews.

How She Raised Her Sons

The clearest picture of Pietra’s parenting approach comes from her son Harry, speaking to E! News during press for the E! reality series Relatively Famous: Ranch Rules in early 2022.

“Yeah, I homeschooled. I think we stayed in a lot when I was growing up.” โ€” Harry James Thornton, E! News, March 2022

That was the environment she built for both boys after 1997.

William Langston Thornton, the elder son, has lived almost entirely out of public view. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2013 and worked as Billy Bob’s personal assistant on Bad Santa 2 in 2016. Since then, he has stayed private by choice.

Harry James Thornton has taken a more visible path. He built a career in Hollywood production, working as a prop master and set dresser on Goliath, S.W.A.T., The Good Place, and Ryan Murphy’s Hollywood. In January 2022, he appeared on E!’s Relatively Famous: Ranch Rules, where eight celebrity offspring spent four weeks working on a ranch in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

On Angelina Jolie, who served as his stepmother from 2000 to 2003, Harry told E! News: “She was so cool. She was so fun and, yeah, she was one of the best stepmoms I’ve had.” He confirmed that Jolie still sends him Christmas gifts every year.

Pietra is now a grandmother. Harry has two daughters, Mia and Nikita, with his fiancรฉe Magi Monet.

From Court Orders to Sea World

In May 2003, Thornton sat down for a Playboy interview with journalist David Sheff. What he said about Pietra was notable, given everything that had come before:

“My ex who I had my boys with, Pietra Cherniak, is one of my closest friends. The kids are here almost as much as they are at her place. We take them to Sea World together.”

By October 2004, Pietra attended his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in person. Getty Images photographed her standing alongside their sons and Thornton’s then-girlfriend Connie Angland. The family, in every practical sense, had found a working arrangement.

Two people who had been in courtroom proceedings in 1997 were raising their boys together by 2003. That detail gets very little attention in most coverage of Pietra’s story, but it is one of the more significant things to understand about her.

Where Pietra Dawn Cherniak Is Today

She lives in Malibu, California, and works as a licensed real estate agent. She has been affiliated with Pritchett Rapf Realtors, one of the largest independent real estate firms in the Malibu area, serving clients across Pacific Palisades, Beverly Hills, Encino, Agoura Hills, and greater Los Angeles. Her more recent social media identifies her with Coldwell Banker in Studio City.

On that same social media, she has identified herself as a lupus warrior and survivor, a health challenge she has managed entirely away from any public forum.

She does not give interviews. She is not at industry events. She has built, by every available measure, exactly the life she chose after 1997.

Most of what gets written about Pietra Dawn Cherniak reduces her to a single chapter: Billy Bob Thornton’s fourth wife, the contentious divorce, the court papers. What that framing skips over is the 25-plus years that followed. She raised two sons who grew up grounded and away from the cameras. She found a way to co-parent with an ex-husband she had once taken to court. She built a career in real estate and a private life in Malibu, and she has done all of it without giving the press anything to write about. For someone who was briefly at the center of a very loud public story, that kind of sustained quiet is a choice. And it tells you more about Pietra Cherniak than the 1997 headlines ever did.

Eleanor Buckley founded Headline Magazine in London this March after years cutting her teeth across British newsrooms, where she learned that the gap between a good story and a published one is almost always editorial judgement. She has reported across politics, UK current affairs, business, culture, entertainment, celebrity news, sport, technology, and lifestyle, and she started Headline Magazine because she wanted to run a publication that treats its readers as people who follow the news closely and notices when a publication doesn't.
