Suzanne Hannemann: Fred Couples’ Wife, Her Son Hunter and How They Met

Fred Couples had told people for years he was not getting married again. Then came a blind date at a kid’s flag football game in 2015, and by February 2022, the 1992 Masters champion was standing in a friend’s oceanfront backyard in California wearing Asics sneakers at his own wedding, with a pastor from Torrance officiating.

The woman in the white gown beside him was Suzanne Hannemann, born Suzanne Radcliffe, a South Bay, California native who has spent over a decade alongside one of golf’s most recognizable names while keeping almost everything about herself away from the cameras.

Background: South Bay, California

Suzanne grew up in South Bay, California, raised by her parents John and Carolyn Radcliffe, alongside her brother Chris Radcliffe. Both parents were natives of the region.

Her professional background has never been publicly confirmed. Golf media has described her broadly as a businesswoman, but no specific career details have ever been documented. Before her relationship with Fred became public, she had a son, Hunter, from a previous relationship. His father’s identity has never been reported by any outlet.

She is approximately 14 to 15 years younger than Couples, who was born in 1959.

How Fred Couples Met Suzanne Hannemann

In 2015, Suzanne and Fred were set up on a blind date. The location was her son Hunter’s flag football game.

Fred described it himself in a December 2024 interview with Golf Digest:

“I met him on flag football. We had a blind football date, and we threw the rock around. I still have the video of that. And I knew he was a big deal nine years ago because he could throw a football.”

That first meeting was confirmed publicly when Golf Digest photographed Suzanne at the 2015 Presidents Cup in Songdo, South Korea, just months later. She appeared in group photos alongside partners of Team USA players, including Tabitha Furyk, Erin Walker, and Paulina Gretzky, and was photographed with George W. Bush at the opening ceremony.

Fred was serving as a U.S. captain’s assistant at that event, and Suzanne was there beside him.

She appeared again with Couples at the 2019 Presidents Cup. By 2021, the PGA Tour’s own website was already referring to her as his fiancรฉe, in a feature on golfer Kramer Hickok. Fred recalled watching a tournament together that year: “Suzanne and I were sitting there watching and she knows him, too. And it was like, can you believe this?”

The Wedding: February 22, 2022

Fred Couples had been married twice before Suzanne. His first wife, Deborah Couples, passed away in May 2001. His second wife, Thais Baker, died from breast cancer in 2009. He had spoken openly in the years that followed about not planning to walk down the aisle a third time.

On February 22, 2022, he proved himself wrong.

The date, 2-22-22, was a palindrome. The ceremony was small and deliberately private, held in a friend’s oceanfront backyard in California. Suzanne’s pastor from Torrance, California officiated.

Fred announced it on March 4, 2022, from the Hoag Classic in Newport Beach, the first event of his PGA Tour Champions season. His description was straightforward: “Suzanne invited a small amount, and I invited a small amount and we had a great celebration.”

The detail that got passed around golf media immediately: Fred wore Asics sneakers and casual clothes while Suzanne wore a white gown. Golf.com noted that “Couples got married wearing Asics,” and the image became one of the more widely shared wedding moments in the sport that year. The couple lives in Newport Beach, California.

Her Son, Hunter Hannemann

Hunter Hannemann was born around 2008. When his mother first started dating Fred Couples, he had no idea who Fred was.

He said so himself at the 2024 PNC Championship press conference:

“When my mom first met him, I had no clue. I don’t think I watched a single minute of golf in my life before he came in. But eventually, I started realizing he’s a big deal and he can play.”

Hunter is a multi-sport athlete from California. His background coming into the golf world:

  • Primary sport: Volleyball, competing as an outside hitter at high school level
  • Previously played: Varsity football as a wide receiver
  • Also played: Basketball

He picked up golf around age 10, a couple of years after Fred and Suzanne’s relationship became more serious. When they married in February 2022, Fred became his stepfather.

The PNC Championship: A Stepfather, a Stepson, and a Golf Course

The PNC Championship is a two-day scramble event in Orlando, Florida, where major champions compete alongside a family member. Fred had been invited for years but always declined, since he had no biological children. After marrying Suzanne, that reasoning no longer applied.

Before their tournament debut, Fred and Hunter had already competed together. They won a member-member at The Madison Club in Palm Springs, playing alongside NFL legend John Elway in the second round. To prepare for the PNC specifically, they played five consecutive days in Palm Springs over Thanksgiving break in 2024.

Fred texted Tiger Woods about the debut. Tiger replied: “Dude, I’m so excited for you. It’s just the hang that you’re going to love.” When Tiger suggested pairing their teams together at the tournament, Fred turned it down.

2024 PNC Championship โ€” debut (December, Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Orlando):

  • Hunter was 16 years old
  • Team Couples was grouped with Nelly Korda and her father Petr Korda
  • They shot an 8-under 64 in Round 1, six of those birdies coming on the back nine
  • Final finish: tied 19th out of 20 teams
  • Fred on Hunter’s ball-striking: “He can hit some shots like Justin Thomas.”
  • Fred at the pre-tournament press conference: “We’re having a blast.”

They returned for the 2025 PNC Championship in December 2025 for their second appearance together, confirmed in the official 20-team field.

The Happy Gilmore 2 Premiere and Malbon Golf

In late 2025, Fred signed on as a Malbon Golf brand ambassador. Golf Digest confirmed that Suzanne is also a fan of the label.

On July 21, 2025, both attended the Netflix “Happy Gilmore 2” premiere at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. Getty Images photographed them arriving together, both in Malbon, Fred in his signature Asics. Golf Digest described it as “an enviable show of date night couples’ dressing.”

Fred had a cameo in the film. He spoke about how Hunter’s volleyball teammates reacted: “They’re probably 20 volleyball players, and they’re just shocked. ‘Your stepdad’s in that movie.'”

What She Keeps to Herself

More than ten years into public life alongside Fred Couples, Suzanne Hannemann has never confirmed her career specifics, never spoken on record about her previous relationship, and never made herself the story. Her name has appeared in tournament galleries, Presidents Cup photos, and Getty Images files from a New York City film premiere, but the personal details have remained entirely hers.

What the record does show is consistency. From a flag football field in California in 2015 to the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando in December 2025, Suzanne Hannemann has been present for the chapter of Fred Couples’ life that the man himself did not see coming.

He met her at a child’s sports game on a blind date. She was just a woman whose kid could throw a spiral. A decade on, that kid is playing golf at the PNC Championship, and Fred Couples is wearing Malbon to film premieres in New York. Suzanne Hannemann is the through line in all of it.
