Who Is Mary Rose Donahue?

When Phil Donahue died in August 2024, the White House named his surviving children in an official statement. One of the four was his only daughter, Mary Rose Donahue.

Beyond that, there is very little on the record. A handful of dates, two photographs and one line inside a relative’s social media post make up nearly everything publicly known about her.

A 1975 divorce split the family in two

Donahue married Margaret Cooney in 1958. They had five children within the next several years, and Mary Rose, the youngest, was the only girl. A 1980 profile of Donahue in The Washington Post reported that all five arrived within six years of the wedding, with two born in the same year. That timeline puts Mary Rose’s birth around 1963 or 1964, which would make her in her early sixties now. No outlet has published an exact birth date for her.

The marriage ended in 1975, after seventeen years. The same profile described how the family split afterward: Mary Rose went with her mother to New Mexico, where Cooney had grown up and later remarried, while her four brothers stayed with their father. Every son went to Donahue, and the only daughter went to Cooney.

Her stepmother, and a night in 1996

In 1980, Donahue married actress and activist Marlo Thomas. She never had children of her own, and told AARP in a 2011 interview that she chose to be a friend to her husband’s five kids rather than a mother figure, since they “already had a mom.”

Mary Rose was in the studio audience for the final broadcast of Donahue, his talk show, which aired on September 13, 1996, after nearly thirty years on the air. Her father shared a quiet moment with her before the cameras cut away, then turned and kissed Thomas as the audience applauded.

A Facebook post from 2011

In July 2011, Thomas posted this after a weekend trip:

Was in Nantucket over the weekend at the fabulous Toppers restaurant. My stepdaughter, Mary Rose, has just started culinary school so their great chef Tom Pearson gave her some tips!

Later that year, a photograph went around of Mary Rose standing next to her father as he carved the family’s Thanksgiving turkey.

What is not known

Nothing confirms what Mary Rose Donahue does for work, whether she is married, or where she lives, and none of that has changed since that 2011 photograph. It is not even confirmed whether she still uses the name Donahue. The same gap applies to her net worth. She has not built a public career, so there is nothing to calculate a figure from, and any number published anywhere is invented.

Named among the survivors in 2024

Phil Donahue died at his home in Manhattan on August 18, 2024, after a long illness. He was 88. His family said in a statement that he was surrounded by Thomas, his children and his grandchildren.

President Biden’s statement on the death named the surviving children directly: Michael, Kevin, Daniel and Mary Rose. A fifth child, James, had died a decade earlier, in 2014, of a ruptured aortic aneurysm.

The second anniversary of her father’s death falls next month. Mary Rose has said nothing publicly since he died, and nothing in how she has lived so far suggests that is about to change.

Eleanor Buckley founded Headline Magazine in London this March after years cutting her teeth across British newsrooms, where she learned that the gap between a good story and a published one is almost always editorial judgement. She has reported across politics, UK current affairs, business, culture, entertainment, celebrity news, sport, technology, and lifestyle, and she started Headline Magazine because she wanted to run a publication that treats its readers as people who follow the news closely and notices when a publication doesn't.
