Shona McGarty is not married and has never been married. The former EastEnders actress has been engaged twice, to electrician Ryan Harris in 2018 and to Irish musician David Bracken in 2024, and neither engagement led to a wedding. Since July she has been in a relationship with her former EastEnders co-star Tony Discipline. The couple are not engaged.
Part of the confusion is the day job. McGarty, 34, played Whitney Dean for sixteen years, and Whitney married Lee Carter on screen and took his surname. The actress herself has planned two weddings and cancelled both.

Who is Shona McGarty’s boyfriend?
Tony Discipline, 37, played Tyler Moon in EastEnders between 2011 and 2013 and later left acting to become a firefighter with the London Fire Brigade. Their characters dated on the soap. In real life at the time, McGarty was seeing Matt Lapinskas, who played Tyler’s brother Anthony, and Discipline was with Jacqueline Jossa.
A friend of the couple explained the delay to The Sun this summer: “They’ve been good friends for years. While there’s always been an attraction there, they were always in relationships. But after they both found themselves single, things began to heat up.”
The romance became public over about five months:
- 17 March 2026: they posted a selfie together on St Patrick’s Day, captioned “What are the chances”
- 7 May 2026: the pair posed together on the red carpet at the Women’s Football Awards in London
- June 2026: photographs of the two of them on a night out in London reached the papers
- 25 July 2026: Discipline shared holiday pictures showing matching tattoos of a toaster, a pineapple and a palm tree. McGarty commented “Tรบ Y Yo”, Spanish for “you and me”
- August 2026: she confirmed the relationship on the record
- 8 September 2026: she posted a video captioned “It was always you”, and he replied underneath, “You and Me Baby”
She gave the confirmation to The Sun’s Fabulous magazine, saying: “We are in love. He’s The One!”
“I’ve had a soft spot for him for years. I always felt like he was The One. We’ve been friends since meeting on EastEnders, we’ve known each other for 15 years, but for a long time it felt to me like it could be more.”
She described the relationship as “moving quickly, in a good way”, and said she had “never felt so looked after and cared for before”. There has been no engagement announcement.
Why did Shona McGarty and David Bracken split?
Bracken, a guitarist with the Irish band Blessed, messaged McGarty on TikTok in 2023 to ask if she wanted to duet on a song. He had no idea who she was. “He didn’t even know I was in EastEnders,” she told OK! magazine. “He had never watched it.” It took her eight months to reply.
He proposed in July 2024 at the Kyoto Garden in Holland Park, a spot he chose because she loves Japanese culture. She had no idea it was coming. Park police arrived mid-picnic to say they were closing up, Bracken asked for five minutes, and they wished him luck. He put on their song, danced with her by the waterfall, then got down on one knee with an emerald and diamond ring.
The couple told OK! they hoped to marry in Ireland within a year or two, in a Catholic church in West Cork, over Christmas.
The wedding never happened. The engagement ended in November 2025, weeks before McGarty left for Australia to film I’m A Celebrity. A source said the pair were “on amicable terms” and had “realised they wanted different things”. Bracken posted a photo of the two of them on the day she entered camp, captioned: “Let’s go girl! You got this.”
In the episode broadcast on 27 November, the campmates got talking about proposals. Kelly Brook said she had been engaged around five times before marrying her husband. Martin Kemp told the story of his wife dragging him into a Dublin jeweller’s to point out the ring she wanted. McGarty got up and went to do the washing-up, and told Tom Read Wilson she had walked away because she would not have known what to say.
Much of the series was spent speculating that she and rapper Aitch were getting together. Both denied it. “Shona’s just a cool person,” he told The Sun. “It was nothing like that.” She finished the series in third place.
Was Shona McGarty engaged before that?
Yes, once. Harris, an electrician and her long-term partner at the time, proposed at a surprise birthday party in January 2018. They separated in 2020.
“We both came to the decision that, actually, this isn’t what we really want,” she told Fabulous. “It fizzled out and we weren’t the same people.”
Between the two engagements she had a relationship of around six months with EastEnders co-star Max Bowden in 2022. The pair stayed friendly, and at the British Soap Awards the following year she said they were “better than ever” and that it had become a friendship. Her earlier relationship with Lapinskas ran from 2011 to 2013, while both were in the cast.
Does Shona McGarty have children?
She does not have children. On screen, Whitney Dean left Walford in 2024 with two young girls, Britney and Dolly, which is a storyline rather than her life. Discipline has a daughter from a previous relationship.
McGarty has said she wants a family of her own. Speaking to OK! during the Bracken engagement, she said she had always wanted children.
How old is Shona McGarty and where does she live?
She was born on 14 October 1991 and turns 35 next month. Her home is Old Welwyn in Hertfordshire, a village a few minutes’ drive from Welwyn Garden City, where she told the BBC in March there is a post office, one dentist and one shop. She compared the place to Emmerdale.
What she is working on now
Acting and music have taken up most of her time since she left Albert Square. She played Jenny in 2:22 A Ghost Story in Dublin in 2024 and Bettie Page in Queen of the Pin-Ups in the West End the following year, and she released a single, Mr Anxiety, this summer. In 2026 she went back to EastEnders for a one-off appearance.
Next month she joins Don Black’s From The Heart at the Garrick Theatre in London, running from 8 to 18 October. Her birthday falls six days after opening night.
The contrast with last time is hard to miss. The Bracken engagement was announced through an exclusive magazine shoot, complete with ring photographs and a wedding plan, within weeks of the proposal. With Discipline, McGarty spent months declining to put a label on it at all, and there is still nothing on the record about marriage.
