The Story Behind a Name That Had Never Existed Before 1995

The town of Aquinnah sits at the westernmost tip of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. The name is Wampanoag in origin, meaning “land under the hill,” and is pronounced ah-KWIN-ah.

Tracy Pollan’s family has a summer home in Aquinnah, and the town carries real personal significance for her and Michael. In 2021, Tracy posted a photo on Instagram from the town to mark their anniversary, describing it as the place where their relationship began.

According to baby name researcher Nancy’s Baby Names, the name Aquinnah had never appeared in U.S. birth records before 1995, the year the twins were born. It entered American naming data for the first time alongside them.

Michael and Tracy also once owned their own home on the island at 4 Windy Hill Road in Aquinnah, before selling it privately to former Boston Bruins star Cam Neely for $2.35 million, as reported by Martha’s Vineyard Magazine. Tracy’s parents’ home in the town remains in the family.

The Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie documentary later surfaced this detail on screen, where the naming of Aquinnah becomes one of several quiet threads connecting the family’s story to the Vineyard.

Growing Up as Michael J. Fox’s Daughter: The Parkinson’s Reality

Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s disease in 1991 at age 29, while filming Doc Hollywood. He kept the diagnosis private for seven years before going public in 1998. By then, Aquinnah was already three years old.

Her older brother Sam was two when the diagnosis came. Aquinnah, born in 1995, arrived into a household where Parkinson’s was already the backdrop.

Tracy Pollan confirmed the significance of this directly at the November 2025 “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s” gala, telling People magazine:

“Michael was diagnosed before the girls were born and very, very early in Sam’s life, so it’s kind of all they know. And they’re just incredibly supportive. They’re very helpful to me. I lean on them a lot.”

In a 2009 interview with Good Housekeeping, Michael said his children had learned “empathy, resilience, and also sorting out what’s important from what’s not” through growing up alongside his condition.

Duke University, the Ballet Program, and a Charity She Co-Founded

Aquinnah attended Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, graduating in May 2018 with a bachelor’s degree covering three subjects:

  • Psychology
  • Visual & Media Studies
  • Art History

She also participated in the Duke University ballet program throughout her time on campus, and spent part of 2016 studying at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad in Copenhagen.

When Michael shared her graduation photo on Instagram, he wrote: “You beat me to it!” โ€” a direct reference to his own unfinished schooling. He left Canada for Los Angeles as a teenager to pursue acting and never completed a degree.

Pancakes for Parkinson’s: The Organisation She Built at 18

While still a student, Aquinnah co-founded and served as president of Pancakes for Parkinson’s, a registered Duke campus organisation that holds a fundraising event on the university quad each spring. All proceeds go directly to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

The organisation is still active today. After Aquinnah graduated, her younger sister Esmรฉ enrolled at Duke and eventually took over as president of the same group, extending the family’s advocacy work through a second sibling at the same university.

Her Career: From Ogilvy to United Talent Agency to Annapurna Pictures

Before graduating, Aquinnah had completed two internships:

  • Event Planning Intern at The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research
  • Social Media and Marketing Strategy Intern at Parker & Otis

Her post-graduation career has followed a clear, progressive path:

PeriodRoleCompany
Sept 2018 โ€“ June 2021Global Analyst, then Global ConsultantOgilvy, New York City
July 2021 โ€“ Sept 2022AssistantUnited Talent Agency (UTA), Los Angeles
Sept 2022 โ€“ PresentTelevision DevelopmentAnnapurna Pictures, West Hollywood

After graduating from Duke in 2018, she joined Ogilvy in New York through the agency’s Associate Program. She progressed from Global Analyst to Global Consultant over nearly three years, working primarily on Samsung’s global marketing strategy.

In July 2021, she relocated to Los Angeles and joined United Talent Agency as an assistant. Fourteen months later, in September 2022, she moved into television development at Annapurna Pictures, where she has worked for over three years.

About Annapurna Pictures: Founded by Megan Ellison in 2011, the company operates as an independent production studio and has earned 38 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture nods for Her, American Hustle, Zero Dark Thirty, and Phantom Thread. Aquinnah works on the television development side, helping bring new projects from concept to screen.

Her Screen Credit: Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie

In 2023, Aquinnah appeared as a credited cast member in Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, the Apple TV+ documentary directed by Davis Guggenheim. Her IMDB credit lists her as “Self โ€” Michael’s Daughter.”

The full family attended the world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2023. The documentary went on to win:

  • 4 Emmy Awards out of 7 nominations
  • 5 Critics Choice Documentary Awards
  • Best Documentary of the Year, National Board of Review

It was also nominated at the 2024 BAFTAs, where Michael presented the Best Film award, standing from his wheelchair to a standing ovation from the audience.

Guggenheim, who has spent summers on Martha’s Vineyard since childhood, first approached Michael about the project after running into him at The Black Dog Tavern on the Vineyard roughly ten years before the film was made. A portion of the post-production work was completed on the island.

Beyond Still, IMDB records show Aquinnah has appeared on Entertainment Tonight five times between 2018 and 2025, always in a family context.

The Fox Family Through 2025 and Into 2026

The most recent confirmed public appearance for Aquinnah was November 15, 2025, at the annual Parkinson’s gala at Cipriani South Street in New York City. The entire family walked the red carpet together: Aquinnah, Esmรฉ, Tracy, Michael, Sam, and Schuyler, photographed in that order in official AP and Getty images.

The 2025 edition was the 15th annual gala, held to mark 25 years of the Michael J. Fox Foundation. It raised $4.3 million for Parkinson’s research. Performers on the night included Jackson Browne, who played onstage with Michael, alongside Jon Stewart, Nikki Glaser, and Denis Leary.

At the event, Michael told People: “They’ve always been there for me, and they continue to be there for me year after year.”

Recent Family Milestones

  • Schuyler Fox married her longtime partner on June 22, 2024, at the Hayfield Catskills venue in New York. Guests included Jennifer Grey and George Stephanopoulos. The date was also Tracy Pollan’s 64th birthday.
  • Sam Fox married Molly Milstein on November 4, 2025.
  • Esmรฉ Fox completed the New York City Marathon in November 2025, running for the Michael J. Fox Foundation, days before her 24th birthday on November 3.
  • On March 1, 2026, Michael attended the SAG Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles with Sam by his side.

Growing up as Michael J. Fox’s daughter shapes a person in ways that are hard to separate from everything else. What Aquinnah has done with that upbringing โ€” co-founding a Parkinson’s charity at university that her sister now runs, working through advertising and talent representation before landing in television development at one of Hollywood’s more respected independent studios โ€” points to someone who took those early lessons seriously. The public has seen almost nothing of her personal life by design. The professional record, however, is there to read.

She has reported across politics, UK current affairs, business, culture, entertainment, celebrity news, sport, technology, and lifestyle, and she started Headline Magazine because she wanted to run a publication that treats its readers as people who follow the news closely and notices when a publication doesn't.
